For thicker hair it may be necessary to have a high heat to really get through the frizz, but for finer hair – or finer sections of hair - you need to use a slightly lower heat. You'll be glad you did when you have shiny, smooth hair for years to come.

Straightening tips from our stylists

Start by spraying TRESemme Heat Defence Styling Spray for heat protection up to 230°C. You can also use the TRESemme Smooth Memory Straightening Spray to help perfect your style. Always work the iron horizontally outwards away from the head. Slide the iron slowly and evenly along each section as you work keeping the iron flat on the hair and not angled (as this will create a line in your hair). The floating plates should make this easier to achieve. Follow the comb through the hair with the straighteners as this will give a smoother straighter finish. Slightly round the iron off through the end to add shape to your style. Allow the hair to cool before combing through.

Curling tips from our stylists

When curling with this styler still work horizontally to the head as you would with straightening, but direct the hair up and away from the head for lift and volume at the roots. Draw the iron a short distance along the section of hair and then with a flick of your wrist, twist the iron back on itself 180 degrees. In one smooth action, slowly draw the iron, whilst twisted in this way, along the hair to the ends. Once through the entire length of hair, twirl the section around your fingers and leave to cool in the ringlet shape you have formed. The slower you draw the iron through the hair the tighter the final curl result will be. Remember - don’t try to curl a section bigger than one inch wide and one inch thick.

Waving tips from our stylists

When making a wave work horizontally to the head, lift the hair up away from the scalp. Grab a section between the iron plates and move it slightly away and out from the scalp. Turn the iron over using your wrist so that the hair is doubled back on itself. In one smooth action, as with curling, draw the iron through the entire length of hair from roots to end. This should be done reasonably quickly as the faster the action the looser the wave will be. Finish each wave by twirling it around your finger and allow it to cool before you dress the finished look. Bigger sections will make looser waves.
