Synopsis
Bloodthirsty vengeance is measured out in buckets, not spoonfuls for this hard-hitting vampire movie sequel. The story picks up right where the first UNDERWORLD left off, in the midst of a war between Lycans (werewolves) and vampires, with the gorgeous death-dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale), on the run with her vamp-wolf hybrid lover, Michael (Scott Speedman). This go-round, there are flashbacks to three centuries earlier and the separation of two ultra-bad brothers, one vampire and one Lycan. The Lycan gets locked in a hidden tomb/prison and the feud begins. In the present, the winged vamp brother Marcus (Tony Curran) is determined to find his Lycan sibling and free him, which would wreak unimaginable havoc on the world. Selenes got to stop it, and the result is mayhem, with great gun battles, bashings and hackings, mysterious artifacts, orgies, and sneaking around in the dripping wet crypts and catacombs. Beckinsale looks great with her jet-black hair, skintight leather bodysuit, red lips, and glowing blue eyes. Director Len Wiseman obviously has a great love for this alternate universe; he keeps the action humming, the blood running, and the cast well-stocked with seasoned British actors like Sir Derek Jacobi, Bill Nighy, and Steven Mackintosh. The sex and violence may still be a bit intense for youngsters, but for the vampire crowd, its a moveable feast of generous, still-twitching proportions.
Underworld Evolution Review
Kate Beckinsale slips back into her skintight rubber outfit for this sequel which picks up immediately where the first "Underworld" left off. But if you can't remember how the original finished, fret not because we get a handy recap within the first ten minutes of this dark and violent movie. The basic plot sees Beckinsale's nightwalker Selene on the run with human / werewolf hybrid Michael (Scott Speedman). And to make matters worse for them, Marcus (Michael Sheen) - the father of all vampires - is hot on their trail because only Selene knows the location of the tomb that imprisons his brother William - who just happens to be the original werewolf - and Marcus is eager for a family reunion.
The first "Underworld" movie proved to be a bit of an unexpected hit back in 2003 thanks to its mix of gothic horror and "Matrix" style action so fans should be pleased to hear that this follow-up deviates little from the template. But the main difference this time is that director Len Wiseman has obviously been given a lot more money to play with and it shows as the action is bigger and the effects are more impressive as human faces stretch into those of bloodthirsty beasts. And speaking of blood, it's here by the bucket load as Wiseman ups the gore ante considerably.
Plot and performance wise "Underworld Evolution" is nothing to write home about - the only highlight is Derek Jacobi hamming it up as a new addition to the series - but ultimately that's not what this movie is about. It's about the style and action that drew punters in first time round - and fortunately this sequel more than delivers in those departments.
