Synopsis
This remake of Mel Brooks 1968 film features Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick in the roles that they originated in the smash Broadway adaptation of the original film. Broadway producer Max Bialystock (Lane) is famous for his spectacular opening night flops. Leopold Bloom (Broderick) is an uptight accountant who virtually discovers gold while reviewing Maxs books. When Leo realises that you can actually make more money with a flop than with a hit, the two team up and begin a search for both the worst script and the worst director they can find to ensure failure. The script selection seems easy when the duo stumble upon SPRINGTIME FOR HITLER, an homage to the Fuhrer penned by Franz Liebkind (Will Ferrell), a German sympathetic to the Nazi cause. Convinced that the script will incite outrage, the duo needs a bad director to seal the deal. Campy director Roger DeBris (Gary Beach) and his assistant (Roger Bart) fit the bill perfectly. But when their scheme fails, Max and Leo find themselves with the worst possible outcome: a hit. To make matters worse, Franz is just a little peeved that Hitler was depicted disrespectfully and he has a gun. Will Max and Leo survive the playwrights wrath? Will they go to jail for cooking the books? And will Leo ever submit to the advances of sexy Swedish receptionist/actress Ulla (Uma Thurman). Directed by stage director Susan Stroman, making her feature film directorial debut, this riotous romp features lots of laughs from the major players, as well as brief appearances by Jon Lovitz, Michael McKean, and Richard Kind. Lane and Broderick make it easy to understand why the show was an unprecedented hit on Broadway, and Ferrell is a scene-stealer as Liebkind.
The Producers Review
First it was a film, then it was an acclaimed stage show and now "The Producers" is back on the silver screen. But this time everything's bigger and better as director Susan Stroman has delivered a fine and pacey adaptation of Mel Brook's award-winning musical. The action, for the uninitiated, follows the exploits of unscrupulous Broadway producer Max Bialystock (Nathan Lane) and his rather green accountant Leo Bloom (Matthew Broderick) as they set out to scam elderly investors by staging the worst show in history. But who could have guessed that the extraordinarily awful 'Springtime For Hitler' would prove so popular?
Perhaps the most noticeable thing about Stroman's movie is that she has literally pulled the show off the Broadway stage and plonked it straight onto the screen with very few (if any?) changes made to the script or sets. Given the success enjoyed by the musical, this is understandable because if something ain't broke, why fix it? But one can't help but feel she may have missed a trick here in refusing to expand "The Producers" scope.
However any lack of ambition is easily countered by the film's cast. Lane and Broderick have shared the stage so many times that their characters and chemistry ooze effortlessly while the extravagant and show-stopping musical numbers fill the screen with gusto. The new additions to the cast fit well to, especially Uma Thurman as leggy secretary Ulla and Will Ferrell as 'Springtime For Hitler's' deranged writer Franz.
Perhaps a trifle long at 129 minutes, "The Producers" gives those of us who never saw the Lane / Broderick pairing on stage the chance to experience the magic first hand - and it's well worth experiencing.
