Synopsis
In Venice Beach, naive Midwesterner JB (Black) bonds with local slacker KG (Gass) and they form the rock band Tenacious D. Setting out to become the world's greatest band is no easy feat, so they set out to steal what could be the answer to their prayers -- a magical guitar pick housed in a rock-and-roll museum some 300 miles away.
Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny Review
Having previously bought his favourite brand of music to the big screen in "School Of Rock", Jack Black is back with a guitar in his hand for this musical comedy. But this time he's teamed up with his 'hard rocking amigo" Kyle Gass as their real-life band "Tenacious D" seek international fame and fortune - and the best way to do that is to break into the Rock And Roll history museum and steal the Pick Of Destiny, a mythical guitar pick forged from one of the devil's own teeth. But on their road to 'Rock God' status they must face jealous peers, a psychedelic Sasquatch and Satan himself.
Bound to strike a chord with fans of 'The D', "The Pick Of Destiny" may not be the funniest metal movie ever made - that honour still belongs to the mighty "Spinal Tap" - but it's still pretty entertaining. Cameos from the likes of Meat Loaf, Dave Grohl and Ronnie James Dio give the film some rock credibility while Black and Gass bounce off each other well. Admittedly Black gets a bit too much at times but that's part of his charm and "The D" needs his enthusiasm.
Musically we're treated to some thoroughly inappropriate but hilarious songs (Kickapoo especially is a favourite) as "Tenacious D" find their feet while their rock and roll fantasies (doubled necked guitars in the shape of women's legs and notes so powerful thy make their audiences heads explode) are bound to appeal to "The D's" target teen audience. It's certainly not an ideal date movie but if the hard rockin' life and the humour associated with it is your bag then it might be worth power sliding along to catch "Tenacious D".
