Synopsis
In the third installation of the ever-popular Pirates... series, Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End, we find our heroes Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann allied with Captain Barbossa in a desperate quest to free Captain Jack Sparrow from his mind-bending trap in Davy Jones' locker. Navigating through treachery, betrayal and wild waters, they must forge their way to exotic Singapore and confront the cunning Chinese pirate Sao Fen (Chow Yun-Fat).
Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End Review
After the crushing disappointment that was "Dead Man's Chest", the final part of the "Pirates Of the Caribbean" trilogy sets sail. But will this voyage experience calmer seas than the middle film of the three. "At World's End" sees Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), Will (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) setting sail for Davy Jones' Locker to try and rescue the late Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). Meanwhile the evil Lord Beckett (Tom Hollander) is using Jones (Bill Nighy) - who is now under his command - to rid the high seas of pirates and so the stage is set for the decisive battle as the pirate brethren fight for their lives against an armada of warships led by the half-man, half-sushi Jones and his crew.
It's a relief to be able to say that "At World's End" is a vast improvement on "Dead Man's Chest". While the second film in the series didn't really seem to go anywhere, this brings the curtain down (maybe?) in fine style with most characters having their storylines satisfactory resolved. Throw in the mother of all sea battles at the end (the highlight of the film) and you're in for a fine ol' ride. And do stay after the credits - there's a glimpse into the future of a couple of franchise favourites.
It's fair to say that "At World's End" has its problems - its way too long at 2 hrs 48 mins, the sheer volume of double crosses will leave you dizzy and Keith Richards' cameo is a touch disappointing - but it's fair to say that director Gore Verbinski has managed to keep his powder dry and deliver a swashbuckling finale that should blow audiences out of their seats.
