Synopsis

Charlotte Coleman stars as Jess, the adopted daughter of an over enthusiastic Evangelist, played by Geraldine McEwan. With an upbringing spent learning the Bible, praying for "heathens in hot countries", she unnerves both classmates and teachers when she begins school. Later in life, Jess meets Melanie, and what begins as a simple friendship soon turns to passion. On discovering the truth about their relationship, her horrified mother and local Pastor believe these "unnatural lusts" to be the work of the devil, and decide extreme measures are necessary if she is to be saved. This highly acclaimed BBC production was adapted by Jeanette Winterson from her own best-selling novel. It won three BAFTA awards, including Best Serial and Best Actress.
