Josie And The Pussycats Review
"Josie And The Pussycats" is a film based on a popular 70s cartoon show taken from a successful comic book that nobody outside of the US seems to remember! However lack of familiarity need not always be a problem; how many Brits had heard of "Wayne’s World" before the movie was released on this side of the Atlantic? Unfortunately though "Josie And The Pussycats" just isn’t in the same league as Mike Myers’s inspired TV spin off, despite desperately trying to duplicate that film’s knowingly ironic and occasionally madcap style.
The film starts off promisingly, with the latest (fictional) boy band sensation Dujour miming to their hit single – "Back Door Lover" – just before they board an ill fated jet. Soon cunning manager Alan Cumming is looking for a new band on which to hang his plans of world domination, and stumbles across our eponymous heroines. Rachel Leigh Cook does the best she can in the role of Josie, but this is a comedy more concerned with setting up the next weak gag than it is with any of the characters. If the gags were funnier, the parody of the music biz sharper, and the references to US TV shows more international then this film might then live up to its own expectations, but as it is this is one thin slice of Americana that has gone decidedly stale on the trip over.
