Synopsis

A group of teenagers, who are trying to avoid attending a school trip, take refuge in an disused underground bunker aided by Martin, the school nerd. For three days and three nights the group have a great time, but when Martin fails to return to let them out things start getting weird...

The Hole Review

"American Beauty" star Thora Birch stars in "The Hole" as Liz, one of four teenage students from an English boarding school locked in an underground bunker at the suggestion of school nutter Michael (Daniel Brocklebank). However Michael does not let them out after the promised three days, and when Liz emerges two weeks later she is the sole survivor and her three schoolmates are dead. Much of the film is consequently told in flash back, with a narration by Liz, and counsellor Philippa Horwood (Embeth Davidtz) attempting to reconcile Liz’s version of events with the unknown truth.

Like "The Blair Witch Project" before it (which was released by the same film company in the UK), "The Hole" will no doubt polarise opinion, with as many people sitting in the pub afterwards declaring it a nonsensical waste of money with some terrible acting, as there will be people who enjoyed the film’s spookier edge-of-the-seat moments. While the film does indeed suffer from some seemingly huge holes in the plot, it does succeed in conjuring up some scary moments. So if you simply enjoy being made to jump out of your seat, then "The Hole" is well worth the price of admission.
